The 45mm f2.0 Carl Zeiss Planar lens may still be the best normal (45 to 60mm) lens for a rangefinder camera (The only one which is most likely better is Leica's new 50mm f1.4 Summilux.). It is based on the celebrated 50mm f1.4 Carl Zeiss Planar for the Contax/Yashica manual focus 35mm SLR system, which is regarded, at least by some, as the best 50mm f1.4 lens for 35mm SLRs. The pictures I have taken with this lens are truly outstanding, which excel not only with respect to contrast and resolution, but with color film, the colors seem to "pop", almost giving a three-dimensional quality to each image. Unfortunately you'll have to buy a Contax G1 or G2 to use this lens, but it is, along with the 21mm Biogon, 28mm Biogon and 90mm Sonnar, among the excellent reasons why you should acquire a Contax G-series autofocus rangefinder camera.
