I have the VC 35 1.4 Nokton and it is definitely prone to flare; for example, when shooting indoors with incandescent lighting behind and above the subject, one can spot a flare (ring) especially on darker part of the image. Outdoors flare is something I don't really mind as it could turn out to be an interesting effect. However, if I shoot indoors, and portraits in particular, I wouldn't want a purple flare to run across my subjects. The hood helps in eliminating unwanted flare and could be useful for certain types of shooting. While the build is good, I still think it should be priced lower.
